Spaghetei すぱげっ亭

Japanese x Italian food isn’t exactly a combination you see at most restaurants but I’ll be delighted to let you know that a pretty decent one exists in Vancouver. Spaghetei is a little gem in downtown that serves up Italian pasta with a Japanese twist. This dinosaur loving (you’ll get what I mean when you visit) establishment is small so I recommend making reservations at least a day before.

Although we each ordered a different item on the menu, I think I’ll just review my two favourite ones: the Mentaiko with Squid and Clam Soup Spaghetti. The Mentaiko with Squid spaghetti is tossed in a  light cream sauce and mixed with assorted mushrooms with lightly cooked rings of squid. It’s a nice and simple dish with just enough flavour. The Clam Soup Spaghetti on the other hand is much more heavy as it’s an assortment of clam meat, bacon, and vegetables drowned in a rich creamy white soup. It was a joy to eat nonetheless.

Each meal also comes with a piece of for-some-reason green garlic bread. It tastes just like normal garlic bread but green.

A side note for people who are interested in coming here, pay attention to the deals they offer! They’re written on the cute placemats and menus. You can potentially get a free drink and salad.

Overview:

Food quality: 9/10 (It’s a good meal but I can’t say that I was blown away by it)

Service: 9.5/10 (Typical friendly Japanese staff 🙂 )

Atmosphere: 8/10 (The store is very cozy, clean, and has a wood & dinosaur theme going on)

Price/affordability: 9/10 (Pretty decently priced especially relative to the size of their portions. For only a few more dollars, you can have a sized-up meal which is quite the hefty bowl of spaghetti. ALSO, you can get free size up if you take away)

Would I go back/recommend this place?: Yes! The food here is unique and has its own distinct range of flavours. There’s a wide variety of spaghetti to choose from and they serve Umeshu (Japanese plum wine) here too! I wouldn’t mind bringing another group of friends here.

Come check this place out 🙂
